New for 2018 - Adventure Northumberland have teamed up with John R Dean to bring White Water Safety and rescue Courses as well as Canoe Leader Training and Assessment Courses.

The Canoe Leader Course (formerly known as 4 star Leader) is a British Canoe qualification allowing leaders to take groups out on Rivers Lakes and Lochs.

The WWSR course is a per-requisite to going on a Canoe Leader assessment.

White Water Safety and Rescue Training is typically delivered over two days and includes a minimum of 10 hours teaching time. Click Here to visit the British Canoeing Website WWSR Page.

The majority of the content is delivered in hands-on practical sessions supported by short riverside periods, covering the theoretical content.

This course will take place on the River Tees.

Due to the paddling environment and the boat control required to participate in this training course, candidates should be:

  • Confident in their ability to paddle on grade 2 water
  • Confident swimming in normal paddling clothing suitable for a moving water environment
  • A minimum of 16 years of age

Canoe Leader Assessment (Formerly 4 Start Leader)

This a 2 day assessment and will take place on Kielder Water as well as The River Tweed.

This course delivers the personal skill level required to lead a group of up to four solo canoe paddlers or three tandem canoe crews, on Moderate White Water and Moderate Inland Water. Click Here to visit the British Canoeing website for detailed information about the award.

Assessments are normally run over two days.

The conditions for the assessment must include:

Large areas of open water that exceed the sheltered water definition, that are no more than 500 metres off shore and in wind strengths that do not exceed Beaufort Force 4

Grade 2 white water or equivalent weirs
